Medical Visa for Thailand — A Complete Guide for Myanmar Patients

If you're planning to travel from Myanmar to Thailand for medical care, the visa question is usually the first practical hurdle. The good news: it's more straightforward than most families expect. The complicated news: there are several types of visa, and choosing the right one matters.

This guide walks through your options, the documents you'll need, and what to expect — based on coordinating thousands of medical journeys since 2017.

Two main visa options

Most Myanmar patients use one of two visa types:

Tourist Visa (TR)

A standard 60-day tourist visa, extendable in Thailand by another 30 days. For shorter medical journeys — most outpatient procedures, consultations, planned surgeries with a few weeks of recovery — this is usually sufficient.

Medical Treatment Visa (Non-MT)

A dedicated medical category visa, valid for up to one year with multiple entries. For longer or more complex treatments — cancer therapy, organ transplants, prolonged rehabilitation — this is the better fit. Required documentation is more detailed, but processing time is similar.

For most of our patients, the Tourist Visa with medical documentation is the right choice. Our coordinators help you figure out which fits your case.

Documents you'll need

For either visa, prepare:

• Passport (valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel date)
• Two recent passport photos (4 × 6 cm, white background)
• Confirmed round-trip flight booking
• Confirmed hotel or apartment booking
• Bank statement (last 3 months)
• Medical appointment letter from the receiving Thai hospital — the key document; we obtain this for you
• Completed visa application form

For the Medical Treatment Visa, you'll also need:

• Detailed medical records (diagnostic reports, treatment plan)
• Letter from a Myanmar physician recommending overseas treatment
• Estimated treatment duration and cost (provided by the Thai hospital)

How to apply

Applications are submitted at the Royal Thai Embassy in Yangon (No. 94, Pyay Road, Dagon Township). They accept applications Monday to Friday mornings. Pickup is in the afternoon.

You can also apply online through the Thai e-Visa portal — increasingly the preferred method since 2024. Online processing avoids the morning queue at the embassy.

Processing time

Standard processing takes 5–10 working days. We recommend applying at least 3 weeks before your travel date to allow buffer time. Express processing is available for urgent cases for an additional fee.

Common reasons for delay or rejection

• Incomplete documentation (especially missing the medical appointment letter)
• Bank statement showing insufficient funds for the trip
• Mismatched information between passport, application form, and supporting documents
• Photos that don't meet specifications
